Water & Sewer Department Offers WaterSmart Online Portal as Part of Ongoing Meter Upgrade Project

As part of its water meter upgrade project, Forsyth County Department of Water & Sewer is now offering WaterSmart, a free online portal where water customers can see their water usage data, get leak alerts and more. Forsyth County water customers are invited to sign up for WaterSmart at www.forsythco.com/watersmart.

Some benefits of WaterSmart include:

  • See how your water usage compares with similar households.
  • Track daily water usage.
  • Detect leaks more quickly.
  • Get high-water usage and vacation alerts.
  • Get personalized recommendations for water conservation.
  • Get tips on how to lower your water bill.
  • Pay and view your water bill online.

“As part of our commitment to provide excellent service and foster water conservation, Forsyth County Water & Sewer is offering WaterSmart, a web portal to empower our more than 68,000 customers to better understand and manage their water usage, and to troubleshoot and quickly fix issues such as leaks, potentially avoiding damage to property or unexpected charges,” said Director of Water & Sewer Scott Adams.

In 2006, Water & Sewer installed an Automated Meter Reading (AMR) system, allowing trucks to pass by each customer’s meter once a month to gather water use readings. With the AMR meters approaching the end of their useful lives and needing replacement, Water & Sewer has been upgrading to an Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) system. The process to replace older water meters throughout the county began in June 2022 and is on track to be completed this spring.

AMI systems can read meters remotely, sending water use information directly to WaterSmart to allow water customers access to near real-time updates. In addition to saving time, AMI will allow the County to read meters remotely without the need to drive trucks up and down streets, resulting in less wear and tear on County vehicles and roads and less disruption to communities.
