Virtual Open House Set for Hightower Landfill Compliance Updates

Public information open house set for 6 p.m. on Dec. 2

Forsyth County Recycling & SolidWaste Environmental Compliance will host a virtual public information openhouse on Wednesday, Dec. 2, to update residents on proposed enhancements to theEPD compliance plan for Hightower Landfill (which is closed).

 

Officials will be available during the openhouse, held from 6-7 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 2, via Zoom video conferencing, todiscuss the scope of a Hightower Landfill Methane Remediation Plan as well as aPotassium Permanganate Groundwater Remediation Pilot Program. Both areenhancements to the current corrective action plan, as approved by EPD, to maintaincompliance.

 

“Methane and groundwater contaminantsare components that all landfills monitor for and report to the EPD,” saidForsyth County Environmental Scientist Manager Sam Buckles. “Although theHightower Road Landfill is closed, the County still maintains the facilitywhile ensuring its safety and compliance with EPD standards.”

 

Methane Remediation Plan

 

TheCounty plans to relocate a methane well (MM-11) to a better location to helpensure methane is not leaving the property boundary. Also, by installing a solarpowered vacuum vent and flare, methane gas will be prevented from migratingoff-site.

 

Potassium Permanganate GroundwaterRemediation Pilot Program

 

Potassiumpermanganate is a treatment methodology to remove various contaminants that arethe result of landfills. The pilot test is being implemented to improve thetest results at the perimeter wells and help to prevent chemicals from leavingthe site via groundwater. 

 

Residents can clickhere to participate in thevirtual open house meeting at 6 p.m. on Dec. 2.
