Forsyth County Recycling & Solid Waste EnvironmentalCompliance held a virtual public information open house on Wednesday, Dec. 2,to update residents on proposed enhancements to the EPD compliance plan forHightower Landfill (which is closed). Watch the recorded meeting below:

The meeting was held via Zoom video conferencing, to discuss thescope of a Hightower Landfill Methane Remediation Plan as well as a PotassiumPermanganate Groundwater Remediation Pilot Program. Both are enhancements tothe current corrective action plan, as approved by EPD, to maintain compliance.

“Methane and groundwater contaminants are components that alllandfills monitor for and report to the EPD,” said Forsyth County EnvironmentalScientist Manager Sam Buckles. “Although the Hightower Road Landfill is closed, the County still maintains the facility while ensuring its safety andcompliance with EPD standards.”

Methane Remediation Plan

The County plans to relocate amethane well (MM-11) to a better location to help ensure methane is not leavingthe property boundary. Also, by installing a solar powered vacuum vent andflare, methane gas will be prevented from migrating off-site.

Potassium Permanganate Groundwater RemediationPilot Program

Potassium permanganate is atreatment methodology to remove various contaminants that are the result oflandfills. The pilot test is being implemented to improve the test results atthe perimeter wells and help to prevent chemicals from leaving the site viagroundwater.
