Water Quality Assured as Lake Lanier Seasonal Turnover Takes Place
Each fall, when algae bloom in the fall in Lake Lanier (the County’s raw water source) and release compounds like MIB and geosmin, our drinking water can taste a little earthy. These compounds are NOT toxic or harmful, and the County’s Department of Water & Sewer actively uses ozone treatment to remove the compounds from the water supply.
As the effects of this treatment process continue to equalize within the water distribution system, some customers may notice minor water quality changes such as chlorine taste or odor. These changes should subside late November or December. The Forsyth County Department of Water & Sewer appreciates residents’ patience as this seasonal change in Lake Lanier runs its course. Please be assured your water is safe to use and drink, even if it may smell or taste different than normal.
