VIDEO: Big Creek Greenway Improvement Project Update

Forsyth County Parks & Recreation continues to make progress on the Big Creek Greenway renovation, a long-term project focused on enhancing safety, durability and the overall experience for Greenway users.

In this latest edition of On the Move, Parks & Recreation Director Kirk Franz and Capital Projects Director John Jefferson share where the project stands today, why improvements are necessary and what residents can expect moving forward.

The renovation follows the closure of Phase 4 in fall 2024 due to safety concerns related to the aging boardwalk structure. Rather than pursuing short-term repairs, the County is moving forward with a full redesign intended to provide a more resilient, sustainable and long-lasting solution.

The project is currently in the design and engineering phase, which includes environmental permitting, material evaluation and coordination with nearby infrastructure improvements. Once complete, the renovated Greenway will feature improvements designed to better withstand wetland conditions, reduce maintenance needs and improve long-term reliability.

This project is being delivered using a progressive design-build process, which allows the contractor and design team to work together from the beginning to improve efficiency, cost control and constructability. The Design-Build team was selected through Forsyth County’s Qualifications Based Selection (QBS) Procurement process based on qualifications and proposed cost.

Once the design phase is complete, the County will release detailed construction schedules and phasing plans so the public can clearly understand timing, closures and progress milestones.

This project is funded by SPLOST IX with a budget of $33 million.
