Forsyth County Renames Roads to Honor Fallen Public Safety Personnel
Dedication ceremony to be held April 14
As a way to honor four Forsyth County public safety personnel who fell in the line of duty, the Forsyth County Board of Commissioners recently approved the renaming of four roads.
At their February 23, 2016 work session, the board unanimously approved a Resolution designating honorary names for four county roads or road segments – two memorializing fallen firefighters and two memorializing fallen deputies.
The Resolution states that “every citizen of Forsyth County owes a debt of gratitude to the courageous men and women who fell while in service to this county and the Board of Commissioners sees fit to honor these individuals.”
Firefighters Allyn Lane and Dennis C. Martin
Allyn Lane and Dennis C. Martin were both volunteer firefighters for Forsyth County who died in automobile accidents en route to their respective fire stations to respond to calls. Lane passed away in 1975 and Martin in 1984.
Deputy Bill Cantrell and Reserve Deputy Larry Mulkey
Deputy Bill Cantrell and Reserve Deputy Larry Mulkey were shot and killed in 1972, after being abducted during a traffic stop.

The segment of North Old Atlanta Road from Georgia State Route 9/Atlanta Highway to Ronald Reagan Boulevard has been designated as “Deputy Bill Cantrell Memorial Road.”

The segment of North Old Atlanta Road from Hutchinson Road to Georgia State Route 9/Atlanta Highway has been designated as “Larry Mulkey Memorial Road.”
A dedication ceremony for the two road segments renamed for the fallen deputies will be held Thursday, April 14 at 10:30 a.m. at North Old Atlanta Road and Georgia State Route 9/Atlanta Highway. The public is invited to attend. (Please note that in the event of rain on April 14, this ceremony will be held Friday, April 15, at 10:30 a.m.).
Plans are being made for dedication ceremonies for the two roads renamed for the fallen firefighters, with details to be announced at a later date.
