Reuse Water/Hydrants

Reuse Water

Reuse water (also known as reclaimed water, recycled water, or non-potable water) is highly treated domestic wastewater that can be used for irrigation and other needs to help extend water supplies.  This water has been disinfected, is safe for incidental human contact, and is tested at least daily for fecal coliform contamination.  If the reuse water does not meet Georgia Environmental Protection Division standards, it is retreated.  Reuse water does not meet the standards for drinking water and must never be used for unintended purposes.

Some of the common applications for reuse water in Forsyth County include irrigation of lawns or golf courses, bus washing, and certain construction uses such as dust control.

Reuse Hydrants

In an effort to reduce the use of potable water for various construction related needs such as dust control, road cleaning, and hyrdoseeding, Forsyth County has installed three reuse water hydrants.  These hydrants are located at 4050 Carolene Way (the Fowler Water Reclamation Facility), 5155 Laurel Springs Parkway (the Dick's Creek Water Reclamation Facility), and on Kemp Road off McGinnis Ferry Road (at the entrance to the Shakerag Water Reclamation Facility).

These hydrants are clearly marked "Reuse Water" and have signs stating that the water is not to be used to fill swimming pools, hot tubs or wading pools, not for human or animal consumption, and not for irrigation of food crops.  These hydrants are painted purple, the symbol for reuse water, as are the signs.

Anyone wanting more information regarding the use of these hydrants or Forsyth County's reuse water program can contact John Marshall at 678-455-8462.
