The Forsyth County Water and Sewer Department is taking measures to eliminate water illegally being taken from fire hydrants and other water system sources. With extensive development throughout the county, the Water Department has detected people illegally tapping into the water distribution system to get water to fill swimming pools, wash down streets, water newly sodded lawns, or other uses.
Tapping into any part of the FCWSD water distribution system without prior authorization or without proper metering equipment installed is illegal. The department will prosecute anyone caught stealing water. The problem mostly stems from the illegal tapping of fire hydrants, or in a few cases, where people have illegally tapped into a water main to provide water service for a home. Developers who need to tap into a fire hydrant can do so legally by applying for a permit at the Water Department and getting a meter attached to the hydrant.
