Public information open house set for 6 p.m. on Dec. 2

Forsyth County Recycling & Solid Waste Environmental Compliance will host a virtual public information open house on Wednesday, Dec. 2, to update residents on proposed enhancements to the EPD compliance plan for Hightower Landfill (which is closed).

Officials will be available during the open house, held from 6-7 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 2, via Zoom video conferencing, to discuss the scope of a Hightower Landfill Methane Remediation Plan as well as a Potassium Permanganate Groundwater Remediation Pilot Program. Both are enhancements to the current corrective action plan, as approved by EPD, to maintain compliance.

“Methane and groundwater contaminants are components that all landfills monitor for and report to the EPD,” said Forsyth County Environmental Scientist Manager Sam Buckles. “Although the Hightower Road Landfill is closed, the County still maintains the facility while ensuring its safety and compliance with EPD standards.”

Methane Remediation Plan

The County plans to relocate a methane well (MM-11) to a better location to help ensure methane is not leaving the property boundary. Also, by installing a solar powered vacuum vent and flare, methane gas will be prevented from migrating off-site.

Potassium Permanganate Groundwater Remediation Pilot Program

Potassium permanganate is a treatment methodology to remove various contaminants that are the result of landfills. The pilot test is being implemented to improve the test results at the perimeter wells and help to prevent chemicals from leaving the site via groundwater.

Residents can click here to participate in the virtual open house meeting at 6 p.m. on Dec. 2.
