Public meeting for Shakerag Water Reclamation Facility set for Sept. 9

The Forsyth County Water & Sewer Department will host an open house meeting from 5-7 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 9, to provide information and gather public feedback on plans to expand the permitted discharge of highly treated wastewater from the Shakerag WRF (553 Kemp Rd.) from 1.25 million gallons per day (mgd) to 2.5 mgd.

Additionally, the new Shakerag WRF flow will combine with flow from the previously approved expansion of the Fowler WRF (7.5 mgd) to increase the permitted discharge of highly treated wastewater to the Chattahoochee River from 6.0 mgd to 10.0 mgd.

Residents are invited to review the proposed permit application from 5 to 7 p.m. on Sept. 9, at the Forsyth County Administration Building (110 E. Main St.). Water & Sewer Department staff will be available to answer questions.

“This project will allow us to increase capacity within our existing facility footprints to support the growth of the County,” said Water & Sewer Department Director Tim Perkins. “The purpose of the meeting is to inform the public on the improvements we are making to the County’s water reclamation operations.”

The meeting will require protective face masks to be worn by all staff and is encouraged for participants. Social distancing will be maintained during the meeting. Several mounted boards detailing the project will be on display during the meeting. The same materials presented are available through the Water & Sewer Department webpage and by clicking here.

Participants at the meeting will be asked to sign in upon arrival and will be given a form to submit questions regarding the project for staff review.
