Stay Safe in the Extreme Heat
When temperatures rise, it is important to take steps to stay safe and help avoid heat-related illness and injury. The following tips on staying safe during times of extreme heat are provided by the Forsyth County Emergency Management Agency and the Federal Emergency Management Agency:
-
Stay indoors as much as possible and limit exposure to the sun.
-
Limit outdoor activity to morning and evening hours.
-
Drink plenty of fluids (do not wait until you are thirsty to drink). Those who have epilepsy or heart, kidney, or liver disease; are on fluid-restricted diets; or have a problem with fluid retention should consult a doctor before increasing liquid intake.
-
Eat well-balanced, light and regular meals. Avoid using salt tablets unless directed to do so by a physician.
-
Limit intake of alcoholic beverages.
-
Wear lightweight, light-colored, loose-fitting clothing.
-
Protect face and head by wearing a wide-brimmed hat.
-
Never leave anyone (including pets) in a closed, parked vehicle.
-
Check on family, friends, and neighbors who do not have air conditioning and who spend much of their time alone.
-
When working in extreme heat, use a buddy system and take frequent breaks.
